Vibration measurement with camera

The assessment of vibrations in industrial equipment and structures is extremely important to ensure safe and efficient operation, since these vibrations generated by assets in operation can drastically reduce the useful life of the structure, or even cause it to collapse due to frequency coupling when not handled properly.

The conventional method of accelerometry makes it possible to collect this vibrational data, but it has some limitations, since these sensors must be fixed to the surfaces of interest and factors such as humidity, temperature, viscosity and corrosion can impact on the results of the instrumentation. With the advent of image-based vibration measurement, factors such as these can be reduced or eliminated.

WHAT IS IMAGE VIBRATION MEASUREMENT?

This method is associated with the use of a high-speed camera, which is responsible for generating video recordings that measure the actual displacement of the structure. These recordings are then processed in specific software, which transforms the image pixels into "sensors", resulting in waveforms and vibration spectra from the amplified videos.

One of the main advantages of this method is the simultaneous measurement at several points, simply by framing them in the same image to be captured. It also eliminates the need to stop equipment to install sensors, taking measurements at a safe distance from the asset of interest and providing our customers with uninterrupted operation. Below you can see some of the images obtained from the collection of vibrations with the high-definition, high-speed camera.
