Accelerometry

Accelerometry is an instrumentation technique used to obtain accelerations and vibrations acting on assets. This data is essential for planning and defining operational actions, such as predictive and preventive maintenance and, in critical situations, even corrective maintenance. This set of actions aims to ensure the Structural Integrity of equipment and structures, and it is extremely important to carry out this data collection and subsequent assessments assertively.

Using the finite element method (FEM), it is possible to simulate the behavior of these assets when subjected to these accelerations and vibrations, since even if a structure is statically approved, its dynamic behavior can lead to eventual collapse due to the vibration frequency of oscillating equipment. With this in mind, some equipment is capable of measuring vibrational data and obtaining these frequencies, and accelerometry is one of them.

WHAT IS THE ACCELEROMETER?

This is an electronic sensor that can be attached to the surface of an object from which you want to collect acceleration and vibration data, making it possible to determine the body's position in space as a function of time. You can see one of these sensors below.

These sensors are installed at strategic points on the equipment or structure, connected to a data acquisition system that records the data electronically. To define these points, a preliminary study is carried out, mapping the points most susceptible to variations in acceleration and vibration values. Once the data has been collected, computer processing is carried out to refine the values obtained, which can then be inserted into the computer model for structural verification.

ACCELEROMETRY APPLICATIONS

Accelerometry instrumentation is widely used in industrial assets to measure and monitor vibrations, data that can be collected both at specific intervals and continuously. Due to the characteristics of the equipment, it is common to use the technique on vibrating equipment such as screens and crushers, as well as on the buildings and structures that house these assets.

It is therefore essential to carry out the applicable dynamic analyses, since if a machine's operating frequency is equal to its natural frequency, the phenomenon of resonance will occur, which amplifies these vibrations and can lead to premature failures. Kot has extensive experience in this type of analysis, with the capacity to evaluate different conditions and study scenarios in a wide variety of oscillating equipment.
