HYDRAULIC TRANSIENTS

The physical phenomena associated with pressure variations in a pipeline filled with fluid, considered theoretically incompressible, can be harmful to the system’s elements.

The hydraulic transient discipline was developed to determine pressure variations resulting from the operation of valves, pumps and other fluid system elements, in order to verify if the system is operating within the acceptable limits and if any protection devices are required.

The pump stoppage condition is one of the critical cases that KOT analyses. Given the topographic profile of the pipeline, properties of the tubes (celerity), protection devices and characteristics of the pumps, the pressure variations along the pipeline can be calculated using the method of characteristics, as proposed by NBR-12215 and AWWA standards.

KOT Engineering has its own calculation tools for hydraulic transients, that were used by professor Ihor Kotchergenko, when analysing SABESP’s water supply system, which provides fresh water to the city of São Paulo.
